Life is holding on and letting go.

Nancy and I set out on this trip for adventure, and because we wanted to just "get away from it all" and I feel like we accomplished everything we intended to do.

The truly extraordinary thing about the trip is that it has brought us even closer together. Nancy and I now know even more about one another...we know more about ourselves...and we know more about our Dads.

She and I sang their favorite songs. We saw some of their favorite parts of the country. We found joy in the same things they loved and she and I knowingly and unknowingly found more of who we are as friends, people, and daughters. We love you Dads and thank you for always believing in us.

We'll stroll hand in hand again
In the land that knows no parting..."

Colorado Trip 2008

Countless memories.

Lots of laughs.

4000 miles

12 states

2 best friends and enough love to last a lifetime!

Cowgirl got some speed!

This is one of our favorite events: Barrel Racing!!! The video is one I took while we were at the rodeo in Fort Worth. She actually ended up being the winner!!! Look at that horse really fly!

...and I can't wait to get On the Road Again

Well...here we are back in GA. The trip has come to an end. Just like all things good must come to an end...Nancy and I are in the bittersweet interim of knowing that we have made so many wonderful memories and now facing a real world full of tomorrows back in the grind.
The funny yet not surprising thing is that Nancy and I have arrived back at home only wanting more. We became Modern Day Drifters (like Dierks Bentley's song) and we are used to the "on the go" excitement of not knowing what is up ahead. We of course have so many good and wonderful reasons to be excited about being home and we have a list of people we want to hug and kiss back here at home!!! However, she and I are truly sad that it is over. There is just something about those highway miles...the open spaces...that blue sky that seems to never end in the West that is so incredibly mesmerizing. We left a part of ourselves out there it seems...yet in that same breath I know it is also the opposite...we've brought it all with us too.

We saw so many neat places...we met so many nice people, and we got to experience so much and participate in so many fun activities. This trip was such a great gift to us both. I use the word gift because that is what I feel like it was to me. I was truly the lucky one to drive through the South up into the Midwest...meet and stay with the Callahans...then get to run and try to beat the camera's self timer with Nancy so we could get a picture at the state line of Colorado...and I was the lucky one because I got to see the mountains O! the mountains! the steadfast solid unwavering mountains! Then too, I received the gifts of being around horses and seeing both of my sisters...eating good food and shopping in Aspen and getting to see Nina play and hearing incredibly rich music at the Aspen Festival...I am blessed even more now since I had the opportunities to go white water kayaking, to watch the stars in a hammock, to camp out in a canyon, to have a picnic at Pike Peak, then later meeting Kathy in Fort Worth, dancing to country music, seeing two rodeos, and singing along to every song on the country radio stations that Nancy and I heard. The countless miles...the heartwarming memories...the people...the experiences...the music...the laughter...the tears...the pictures...the planning and saving...the maps...the early mornings and late nights...every turn of the tires...every inch of road we covered...Nancy and I are better for it.
We are more enriched and certainly more inspired.
Hope exists. Restoration begins here, and she and I have come to learn that sometimes it just takes a detour to really know where you are in life. This trip will forever be in our hearts and minds, and we can't wait to get on the road again...

Texas' state motto is:

FRIENDSHIP!!!!

How true?! Nancy and I absolutely loved being in Texas! The people truly are friendly, especially Kathy who was so incredibly sweet to open her beautiful home to us! Thank you Kathy if you are reading this!!!! (Say hello to Owen Wilson for us!!!! )

So of course, people generally associate Texas with the common phrases "Don't mess with Texas" and "Everything's bigger in Texas"...well I have decided that everything is BETTER in Texas! (Well at least the Dallas Fort Worth area!!!) Nancy and I had a ball there. The charm truly worked and she and I are completely infatuated with Texas' spirit, pride, patriotism, and western ways. She and I had the pleasure of attending one of Fort Worth's rodeos at Stockyards, and then we saw Joe Diffie at Billy Bobs Texas Honky Tonk! The rodeo was so incredibly exciting.

In the words of Garth Brooks:

His eyes are cold and restless

His wounds have almost healed

And she'd give half of Texas

Just to change the way he feels

She knows his love's in Tulsa

She knows he's gonna go

Well it ain't no woman flesh and blood

It's that damned old rodeo

Well it's bulls and blood It's dust and mud

It's the roar of a Sunday crowd

It's the white in his knuckles

The gold in the buckle

He'll win the next go 'round

It's boots and chaps

It's cowboy hats It's spurs and latigo

It's the ropes and the reins

And the joy and the pain

And they call the thing rodeo

She does her best to hold him When his love comes to call

But his need for it controls him And her back's against the wall

And it's "So long girl, I'll see you." When it's time for him to go

You know the woman wants her cowboy

Like he wants his rodeo

Well, it's bulls and blood

It's dust and mud It's the roar of a Sunday crowd

It's the white in the knuckles The gold in the buckle

He'll win the next go 'round It's boots and chaps It's cowboy hats

It's spurs and latigo

It's the ropes and the reins

And the joy and the pain

And they call the thing rodeo

It'll drive a cowboy crazy

It'll drive the man insane

And he'll sell off everything he owns

Just to pay to play her game

And a broken home and some broken bones

Is all he'll have to show For all the years that he spent chasin' This dream they call rodeo

I am in no way exaggerating, but when you experience rodeo...it is beyond words exciting. There is an electric tangible energy that fills the arena. Everyone in the crowd bonds together and you all pull for that cowboy out there who is literally risking his life in order to compete and defy nature's odds.

We are hooked.

Now, I must confess...there was another very exciting/memorable experience that indeed occurred at the rodeo. The announcer called for all of the "single and over 18 women" in the house and I raised Nancy's hand for her faster than she could blink, and thanks to my yelling/whoopin and hollerin, and the announcer's good taste/eyesight he picked Nancy to join five other ladies. The name of the game was DANCE OFF!!! Nancy strutted her stuff down in the rodeo arena and was in the final two! She was blindfolded for part of it, and actually the last girl standing was left all alone in the ring everyone watching...everyone cheering and then the girl took off her blindfold and she was a little lone dancer out there and the joke was on her. So thankfully, Nancy was NOT the last one standing because that would have been exactly the set up. She would have been alone...and standing. It was hilarious! I'm sure she loves me for it even more. Well what are friends for anyways?

The rodeo was incredible and so was Billy Bobs! We were surrounded by lighthearted cowboys and cowgirls all out looking for a fun Friday night. People we dancing and hanging out together listening to the country concert and she and I felt right a home. The only thing we kept saying was we wish so badly that GA and FL had fine establishments like this one. There was food, drinks, dancing, music, a gift shop, games, TVs, everything you can think of, and it was all under one roof.

Fort Worth was so memorable, and we want to go back soon. It was just the fun boost we needed to drive it on back East.

Amarillo Sky not a hare too early...?

One of Nancy and my favorite country artists is most definitely Jason Aldean. He sings a song called Amarillo Sky. We are listening to it right now here in Amarillo!!! How genuine of us?!
I really do love about Country Music for many reasons, a couple being
1. The strong sense of pride and appreciation for hard work.
2. The dedication and pride for America
That is what his song is all about. You at home should listen to it!
Jason Aldean (from Macon BTW woo woo!!! Go GA)
Amarillo Sky
Hicktown CD
Even though Country Music bears the brunt of a lot of jokes, and is usually loathed with a burning passion by most people, I love the messages in the songs. I really take the words to heart and I think Nancy and I love it so much because we can relate to the songs. Maybe we aren't toothless...or living in double wides currently BUT the joys and the heartaches of life are the same no matter how twangy you say them.

So, with Ipods blaring and singing voices in tune we once again hit the road. We've headed South. I can only hope that his blog appears larger on your screen...because by goodness it is being written in TEXAS!!!! Nancy and I made it safely despite the following:
Rain
Ominous clouds
Lack of one County Road sign
Lack of Jacqueline GPS Extraordinaire...she was being temper mental
and Mr or Mrs Cutest Wild Bunny who is now in Bunny Heaven. There are carrots galore, and green fields up there and I know I will eventually forgive myself for "bumping her on a rather dark Texas road slightly outside of Amarillo"

YALL!!!!! I feel terrible. I love bunnies! Well, all I know to say is that Nancy is an awesome friend because as soon as the bunny "brushed up against" my tire she said..."I'm sure he scampered off! He's fine"
Goodness I love her.
So, all things considered today was a fine traveling day. Yes it got harey at times?!?! I should stop. It's not very bunny at all...and I'm not hoppy about it.
For real though, this trip continues to be days full of natural beauty, blessings, and bonding. We absolutely loved being with Mark, Winter, and Nina. We are looking forward to being with all of you who are reading this too!!!

The trip down south has commenced! It was sad to leave Colorado today...but now Nancy and I will carry it with us wherever we go!

Look out TEXAS! We are here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: While driving as Nance was snoozing I thought:
"Life is not looking for its problems' solutions, but rather it is experiencing its realities"

I know problems in life inherently exist and easily consume us. The good thing though is that realities can be either good or bad (simply put) so "life" is all about our experiences...and the problems exist, but they do not have to define our lives. I am so lucky and blessed to be experiencing this trip and experiencing the friendships like the ones I have surrounding me. So whichever sky you may be under tonight Amarillo's or not, know that you are loved and just like this road just goes on and on, the capacity for experiencing love is truly great and limitless.

Blue skies.

If you've been askin about Aspen...

Well...it feels good to be back to the journal. I have been away from the computer now, but delightfully been with Nina instead.
Nancy and I went white water kayaking yesterday and we were in boats called Duckies. Let me just say that we were so lucky we didn't get stucky.
Winter and Mark joined us, and thanks to their friends we all went together on the trip down the CO River. We had a great time and the rapids were fun! The early morning kayak adventure got our hearts racing, and we hopefully got some good pictures thanks to a waterproof camera we purchased at Wal Mart beforehand. Then after the Wet n Wild boat ride we met Nina for lunch at a Wrap joint in Aspen. We said adios to Mark and Winter and they headed for Sante Fe. Lunch and ice cream in Aspen was great and the Burberry shopping was definitely the cherry on top of our afternoon.

I'd like to take the time to mention a little bit about our evening. Nancy and I went to the rodeo in Snowmass and then caught the second half of Nina's concert. The concert was sold out, but thankfully were able to stand outside.

We went from the rodeo to the ballet...and loved it. How great is it that we have an open appreciation for all things artistic. Both shows were incredible to watch. We have discovered boots are very versatile...I wore mine to both the Rodeo and the Ballet. Well...I guess life really is a dance and no matter what shoes you wear, you've got to be ready for anything and learn as you go.

I know the blog has been lacking the last couple of days...but I will come back to it hopefully tonight.

I don't want to say goodbye to Nina, but we must move forward. I'll see her again soon though.
TEXAS here we come. I'm sure tonight the blog will be bigger....

This picture says it all

Yay!

Nina

This morning we left the Crystal Inn behind us. It was a semi precious hotel...a real gem of a place. Or as Winter put it, a "sterling establishment". We did not leave quietly however. We had an interesting wake up call aka the FIRE ALARM went off. So after a blast of an awakening, Nancy and I headed to Glenwood Springs. Then the long awaited event occurred! We made it to Aspen and met up with Nina!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot put into words or even begin to accurately describe the feeling of seeing Nina! Nancy and I were so excited! Just as we were to surprise Winter in the Denver Airport! So here we are...best friends and sisters alike all together at last. I am so incredibly thankful for these loves that endure any and everything...these friendships that never fail, and for the bonds that we all share collectively and individually. I do however feel as though some people are missing from this equation. If you are reading this on the East Coast right now....YOU ARE ONE OF THEM!!!!

It's a clear night in Colorado...and the blanket of stars will cover us tonight. We'll need rest for tomorrow...because cough cough we are going to HIT THE SHOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gucci...Prada...Dior....Fendi...Burberry HERE WE COME! This trip has been amusing in the fact that Nancy and I have truly been on all ends of the spectrum. In a way, it has taught us a lot about ourselves. So the lesson here...just because we are roughing it with camping...eating instant oatmeal, instant noodles, instant EVERYTHING (goo!), doesn't mean that I can clean up in a hurry...put that swing back into my walk, let my hair down, turn up the southern drawl and finesse my way through some designer shops. Look out VISA Bill here I come.

PS: Mom, no worries. While in Colorado I've picked up a little bit more....hmmm shall we say exaggeration. So there won't be an outrageous Visa bill. I'll just pay cash.

JUST KIDDING!!!! Love you and miss you.

You say "jump"...I say "how high?"

This morning after leaving our Bed and Breakfast (The Silk Pincushion) we decided it would be sew nice if we could go to the Hunter Jumper Festival in Estes Park. So we packed it up and headed north. Nancy and I watched the Jumpers ring, and apparently the show was a pretty nice show. Riders came from all around the country to compete. It was a very fun afternoon. Nancy and I loved being near the excitement of the ring and she and I both wished we were riding ourselves!!! The picture is of one of the riders in the Adult and Children Division for the Amateur Jumpers. Then after the show, Nancy and I went to Denver and picked up Winter! We are all together tonight, and then tomorrow the whole gang should be together. I am also including in this entry a picture from the B&B. Nancy and I had it rough this morning...waking up to Victorian lace and the smell of breakfast. Then bad turned to worse as we just HAD to walk downstairs and eat french toast casserole, ham, bacon, granola and yogurt parfaits, fresh fruit, and drink coffee and tea.......aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......it was absolutely delightful!!! The only rough part about it was having to leave.

It's off to bed now. I think I am keeping everyone awake with my tap tap tap of the keys. We are all in here in one room. So I am trying to think consolidating thoughts.

Well goodnight everyone. Tomorrow will be here before we know it...except all of y'all on the East coast have a two hour advantage on us. After staying at the Silk Pincushion Nancy and I have been giggling a lot more. We noticed we were both a lot more silly today...maybe its Road Trip Fever...or the altitude...but I'm thinking that after you sleep in somewhere SEW nice...of course you'd be in STITCHES for the rest of the day. I am sure too...that if we had looked long enough while we were at the horse show...we would have found that lost needle in that haystack too...ok so now I'm SEAMingly going on and on. Enough is enough. Goodnight!!!!
All our love to everyone back home!

Clear mountain mornin'

Nancy and I camped out last night.

Yup thats right. We pitched our tent and set up my eagle's nest hammock. She and I had a nice night under the stars...and thanks to the LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!! LOUD!!! neighbors...I know all about a man named Ron...how he has 60,000 dollars and "he is never willing to share it". Well fellow camper that sounds terrible...but come on please don't keep me up late at night yellin about it!!!

Anyways, the morning is what I will remember most about being at Castle Rock. Nancy and I woke up at 5:45 Mtn time and watched the sunrise while in the hammock. She and I nestled ourselves with our sleeping bags and watched the start to our day. The stillness was so inticing. It made me sad when the hustle and bustle started up again. The quiet calm morning feeling has truly stuck with me all day. I hopped out of the hammock leaving Nancy all comfy cozy and I snapped a few pictures. Ill post them here in a minute.

We left Castle Rock with warm feelings in our hearts, and a little strain in our necks thanks to having fallen back asleep in that morning hammock I mentioned earlier. Then she and I headed towards civilization aka the Outlet Mall. Both places are very wild...just dealing with different animals if you catch my drift!?!

The cool mountain air up here is something else. Nancy and I truly find ourselves silent a lot of the trip because we are at a loss for words. The beauty up here in these mountains captivates us everyday and with sunrises like this one we truly understand how a man can fall in love the West...be addicted to the outdoors...and his true passions can be existing as one with nature and appreciating the blessings God has given. Nancy and I feel like this trip is one of restoration. Much is taken, yet much abides...Our love abides.

I am reminded of a snippet from one of my favorite Tennyson poems that says:

I cannot rest from travel; I will drink life to the lees. All times I have enjoy'd greatly, have suffer'd greatly, both with those that loved me, and alone; on shore, and when thro' scudding drifts the rainy Hyades vext the dim sea.

I am become a name; For always roaming with a hungry heart

Much have I seen and known,-- cities of men and manners, climates, councils, governments, Myself not least, but honor'd of them all,--

I am a part of all that I have met;

Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'

Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades

For ever and for ever when I move.

How dull it is to pause, to make an end,

To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!

As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life

Were all too little, and of one to me

Little remains; but every hour is saved

From that eternal silence, something more, A bringer of new things;

then it goes on to say

Death closes all; but something ere the end,

Some work of noble note, may yet be done,

Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods. The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks; The long day wanes; the slow moon climbs; the deep moans round with many voices.

Come, my friends. T'is not too late to seek a newer world. Push off, and sitting well in order smite the sounding furrows;

for my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset, and the baths of all the western stars, until I die.

It may be that the gulfs will wash us down; It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles, And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'

We are not now that strength which in old days

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,--One equal temper of heroic hearts,

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Pony Express

What an interesting morning. Nancy and I woke up ate oatmeal then ventured off to the nearest Post Office. I looked up directions and wrote them down on a piece of paper. Needless to say, we ended up relying on my GPS that I have on my phone. I call her Jacqueline. We are in a love hate relationship because she either gets me right where I am going or she says...."recalculating route" or "make the next legal u turn" in a somewhat agitated mechanical voice so I just talk back to her... and somehow I feel better when we converse. So, in a rage Nancy and I both talked to Jacqueline....questioning her inner compass...wondering if she knew what a street address even was... but we made it. The directions I had gotten were sort of right and Jacqueline the GPS was right on target after we coaxed her into it. So we went to a CO Springs Post Office and invested in some more stamps.
Then we headed toward the mountain! We went on a Wildlife Trail Ride!!! Nancy and I busted out our faithful cowgirl boots, jeans, and chaps and mounted our trusty steeds. Too bad my horse's name was Eleanor. There was no real sense of excitement from that...but Nancy's horse was named Jake...at least that sounded more mysterious...not so predictable like "Eleanor". Names aside, we had a delightful time. She and I were somewhat too at ease though because we didn't canter or go fast at all...but it would have been hard/impossible considering that we were riding on a wildlife preserve that was one giant incline. I have never thought that much about a horse's hind quarters...thinking WOW! what a leg workout!!! Nancy and I always love being in the saddle so it was a great ride. The weather was very nice and we saw buffalo and elk!!! We did however overhear that our guide who's name is Rick served in Iraq twice and he might be called to fight again. It was a sobering reminder that our country is at war...and even though we get caught up in our everyday routines, there are men and women fighting and dying for our country. So with patriotism in our hearts and that unmistakable smell of horses still in our noses we headed off to the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Museum.
We absolutely loved looking at all of the pictures, seeing the saddles, the buckles, and reading the information on Rodeo's finest. There was such an excitement in the air...you could feel the nerves, the passion, the dedication, and all the time surrounded by the many risks of rodeo. After we walked through the museum Nancy and I agreed that we should just give in to our inner cowgirls and live in the saddle. We just need the horses...hint hint moms!!!

Then it was off to a very late lunch. We ate at Zios Italian Kitchen and now we are camping out. Thank you to the nearby RV park that is allowing me to use the web!!! heeehee!
We've pitched our tent and we set up the hammock. Nancy and I are going to sleep out under the stars tonight.
Mountain sunrise here we come...
until then goodnight.

A Plan! Never leave home without one...

Nancy and I enjoyed a delightfully cheap oatmeal breakfast. I slaved over the hot stove for hours...boiling water...pouring it into the bowl and adding it to the Quaker Oatmeal packet. My word. I'm exhausted. So with a good healthy whole grain start to the day:
We have a plan for the day!!!

Garden of the Gods.
Horseback riding.
Outlet Mall shopping.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in CO. Springs, and everyday we get closer to seeing Nina and Winter!!! We are both enjoying the beautiful mountain views...the crisp clean air, and we are above all enjoying each other's company.

The day spent at Pikes Peak was so much fun and it truly left us feeling starstruck. The experience and the view yesterday is proof enough that if you look with humble eyes you'll be amazed at beauty that is not man made. Keep an upward and positive outlook and you'll see the gifts of nature that are all around you each and every day. We found it in the wildflowers, in the clouds, in the sunshine...we saw it in the wildlife, and the mountain landscape. The mountain terrain was never the same...no piece was alike...but it meshed together in order to form one of the prettiest sites we've ever seen. So keep an open mind with open eyes and look at the world around you with appreciative eyes. Nancy and I are so grateful for the gifts that surround us. The gifts that we cherish aren't man made we didn't buy them...they are the beauty that surrounds us...the scenes and the views that make us seem so rightfully small when placed in front of them, and love and the bond that she and I nourish and build with every bend in the road and every rock climbed.

Such an awesome view!!!

America's Mountain

Pikes Peak!!!

May cause shortness of breath...

Today, we went to Pikes Peak. It was such an amazing day. The mountain drive was fun and it was absolutely beautiful!!! Then we enjoyed a picnic on the side of the mountain. We were both at a lost for words so much of the day because we are still in awe of how spectacular the landscape is out here. Will write more later...right now Nancy and I are really tired and we are going to take a quick cat nap. Then its out to dinner!!!

Life on the road

Nancy and I left Salina Kansas this morning and headed west. We had a lot of fun along the way. We sang our favorite songs and talked...we even called a few places to see about horseback riding for while we are out here. The trip is coming along nicely and the experience is most definitely shaping up to be a memorable one. Between stopping and eating Dairy Queen in a very quiet Hays Kansas to hopping next door and eating a BBQ sandwich from "Bar B Cutie" restaurant the trip has been very flavorful. She and I are really not opposed to making this trip a driving tour of the United State's Dairy Queens...but then we would probably not fit in the car after about hot fudge sundae Ohio #35.

We did however make it here to CO. and we are truly overjoyed. The hotel is great and the mac and cheese we made here in the hotel room's kitchenette was good thanks to the "borrowed" butter and milk from the Kansas hotel's continental breakfast that we put on ice this morning. Nancy and I are pinching our pennies as much as possible and we are having a ball doing it.

On a totally different note, I personally find it so interesting when you look back to the events in your life with observant eyes. You look not at the point A to point B events in your childhood or lifetime but you look at the road which you took to get there. There are so many little details, incidental conversations, funny stories, small gestures, mindless even habitual routines...yet it is the combination of all of these things that allows us to get from one truly memorable experience to the next. Today, we took 70W for such a long time. Then finally we got on US Hwy 24. What a change of pace?! It was so much more laid back and scenic. Every turn expanded on something we had already gotten a chance to take in...it wasn't like a busy interstate where you skip from one exit to the next. This road allowed us to process what we were looking at while driving on it. The slower speed limit and calm nature of the drive allowed the farms to unfold their stories to us. We could get a feel for the little towns as we drove through them, and as we drove closer and closer to the mountains we began to understand why we worked so hard to get here in the first place.
The sky again tonight was radiant. The beautiful colors in the sky provided a perfect backdrop for the clouds and the mountains were the most perfect welcoming skyline we've seen so far. I do not find it odd at all that we've traveled so many major routes to get here and this last little drive on a scenic road is the one that will be forever in my memory.
Life on the road is often a phrase to describe a phase of moving around a lot, or being able to pick up and go, but tonight after traveling like we have...I think of it so differently. Life is whatever we make it to be. We carry it with us and of course there are things out of our control, so we do the best we can with what we've got, and the added clause to that sentence is: We also work endlessly until we get what we need. All of the little things get us from one place to the next. Here Nancy and I have worked so hard to get here and we are here. All of our friends and both of our families have worked, donated, and prayed to get us here and here we are. Nancy and I carry with us all of the love, memories, experiences, and life with us. Now, we are adding to it. Another chapter...another connection for our life stories...found right here on this road.

State line

May I burrow that?

You certainly Kan.

Does this dustbowl make me look fat?

An 8000 pound PD.

Land of the WHAT!?

America is known as the Land of the Free. We are all in agreement. Well Nancy and I would like to inform you that Kansas is the Land of the Prairie Dogs. YES. Prairie Dogs. While traveling on 70W we kept seeing signs for Come see prairie dogs!!! Come see the world's largest prairie dog!!! We have an 8000 pound prairie dog!!!! So, like any adventure seeking animal lover slightly hesitant roadtrippers we got off the federally funded interstate and went to Prairie Dog Land. We walked in to a little house where a man informed us that we could take pictures and we could buy a bag of food to feed the animals and he said "have fun"...so we went out the door to the backyard. The sandy fenced in field was home to bundles of little furry very noisy prairie dogs. Watch your step now...because you will fall into the burrows that cover the yard thanks to the impeccable digging skills of the p-dogs. Nancy and I carefully crept around the "prairie" with cameras in hand and snagged a few photos of the sometimes very stately looking rodents. I would guess the advertisement for the 8000 pound prairie dog was true...there was a plasticy statue of a rodent on its hind legs...and if I had to guess it looked to be about 20 ft tall...8000 pounds...dreamy brown eyes...Well you get the idea. You know? It is never a dull moment with the two of us and the journey to CO has already been very memorable very exciting very fun and very prairie.

American dream: Cute house with a white picket fence out front with a dog in the back.

Kansas reality: Little House on the Prairie with dogs all around.

I'd say...its the best 12.50 admission that Nancy has ever paid.

Oh Yes we KAN!

The night will be spent in Kansas. Nancy and I made it safely to the hotel and she and I made tuna salad for dinner. If we were on Food TV right now...we would most definitely have our own show called: Dont Forget the Can Opener
After gathering everything together for our night's stay and for our "save money dinners" we realized we forgot one tiiiiiinnnyyy little novelty of mechanical genius. We call it the can opener....or shall we say KAN-opener?!? Anyways, we borrowed the hotel's can opener an we made tuna sandwiches in our room...thanks to the gifted brought from home relish...technically stolen mayonnaise packets from Nancy's work and ChickFilA and the tuna we brought from home too. They were delicious.

Kansas is flat.

Tomorrow, off to CO!!!!!
No matter what comes your way in life always bring a can opener with you and remember whether you are in KANsas or not... YOU KAN DO IT!!!

Cat on a hot tin engine

Right meow i will post a pic of the engine and you can see the little kitty down in there!!! haha. Goodness gracious.

CaT AtTaCk!!!!

This morning Nancy and I woke up and got ready for breakfast. Mr and Mrs Callahan were so kind as to not only extend their kindness and allow us to stay in their home but they took us out to breakfast in one of the suburbs of St Louis. Nancy enjoyed a trifecta of breakfast goodies which included a Belgian waffle, bacon, and eggs. I on the other hand decided to be daring and play a little game of breakfast comparison. I tried the Midwest's version of biscuits and gravy. While delicious, it was no Biscuit Box. Nancy and I continually comment on how nice the Callahans are and we hope to go back and visit! Now, of course as we mentioned before, they need to come visit the ATL and maybe even take them to Athens...which is in the North Eastern part of GA not the South Western. (I am glad we got all of that straight/I am the navigator...cough cough Nancy) So on to crossing the state of Missouri. It was a very pretty drive and we were excited to go over some hills and see the different farms along the way. Nancy got really excited when she noticed we were on the official trail of Lewis and Clark and that began the deluge of facts she knows due to a report she did on them this past school year. Of course, we cannot mention going through Missouri without mentioning two other things: 1. Oregon Trail Windows made for Computer AWESOME game and 2. Waiting for Guffman aka movie spectaculare! We definitely spent a good time on 70W discussing our memories of the Oregon Trail game...I confessed it was sort of funny when my characters wouldn't make it and we would have to leave one of them behind on a farm or something...or Nancy reminisced that she would check the water levels and make her horses ford the river with her wagon crew. So, as our Honda as our wagon we traveled back in time to the days of Windows 95 and we head west. Even now, we are right here at Kansas City and we passed through Independence Missouri where if you made it there you were practically home free. We are not home...and nothing is free...but we are sippin on some drinks enjoying the technology of free wi-fi!!! So, we are off to western Kansas.

NOOW the long awaited Cat story. As this entry name suggests, there was a cat...and there was an attack.

Let the record show that family friends have commented on how "I bring out the wildlife" cough cough Bruce. Anyways, Nancy and I were in Warrenton Missouri which is on I 70...this was about 11 this morning and we stopped at a gas station, Kroger, a dollar store, and the post office (you know the usual) and while we were at the Phillips 66 gas station we had an encounter with mother nature. By that I mean...a wild very ferocious sweaty tooth killer of a cat jumped up into our car's engine. On second thought...before I "ask for it" let me straighten out that story. A cuddly little scared kitty sought shelter and nestled itself in Nancy's front fender. We along with some local Missourians put our brave faces on, wore our animal lover hearts on our sleeves, and we rallied together to save the kitty. Thanks to a couple of...cat lover locals we got the kitty out by all of the following: A ski glove, a screwdriver, wet cat food, dry cat food, elbow grease, prayers to the kitty gods, and an abundance of "Here Kitty Kitties!!!!" Look closely to the tail hanging down to the right of the tire...yup...thats our furry intruder.

Nancy and I are just a couple of "roll with the punches" type people and now we can add "Roll with the hairballs" to our resumes too.

We look forward to maybe another post tonight in Western Kansas...and then tomorrow!!!! CO!

Our love grows for each other. Our appreciation for kindness grows and our hearts are reminded that human generosity does not have to be a rarity. It can be found in the suburbs of St Louis...in animal lover's heart's at a gas station, and of course all of our families and friends back home who have helped make this trip possible. The next turn is up ahead in that road and we intend on seeing where it takes us. Until next time...hope yall have a puurrrrrfect afternoon and evening!

On the Road Again

Day one
Nancy and I left a very toasty GA to head north into TN. We winded our way up to Nashville where we toured the Willie Nelson Museum...aka a southern hillbilly deluxe touristy shop where the "not on sale...full price...high quality items" are t-shirts with half naked ladies on them and of course the dime a dozen but somehow sentimentally dear YOUR BEST SHOT IN NASHVILLE shot glass and of course we will not exclude the racoon skin hat (that made Nancy's blue eyes sparkle). Anyways, the Grand Ole Opry was a fleeting moment in the tour but a good one and she and I oooohed and awed over all of the memories that have been made there...all of the memories that will be made there and we somehow felt a little closer to all of the stars that have performed there and I must confess my heart beat a little faster knowing that I was right where so many dreams had been fulfilled. Country music means so much to Nancy and me and even though there was no "Lunch in Nashville" we did however experience the heat, the southern twang, and the American by birth but Southern by the grace of God mentality. In other words, these two GA peaches were right at home listening to Willie while looking at the home of country music.
Then it was on to Kentucky. Wait no. I forgot a very important detail. In case anyone NEEDS to know. There IS a Dairy Queen in Clarksville TN. They are open on Mondays...and their Hot Fudge Sundaes and Chocolate Extreme blizzards are delish.
So now on to the Bluegrass State. We would have gotten a picture of the state sign...however...Nancy drove up the Truck Entrance side of the rest stop where very suddenly our sedan felt like the Monopoly car...so we did not pass go...or collect 200 dollars (which would have paid for 3 gallons of gas btw) instead we JETTED on interstate 24.
Kentucky was beautiful. The sky was a beautiful blue and the rolling grassy hills were breathtaking and inspiring for us Equestrians. So after Kentucky we entered Illinois and stopped at a rest stop. There was a wooden cutout of superman's body and you could have your picture taken as an Illinois superman. Well....I said to myself....no wonder they are inspiring passerbys with super heroes...you need to have powers to endure the states that are more and more shall we say corn fed.
Moving on
One of the highlights of the trip was a magnificent sunset when we entered Missouri. The St Louis Arch was neat to see as well. The sky was so radiant though. It served as a promise somehow to Nancy and me that everything will come together and it has. We are staying with family friends...we are safe and having so much fun and we ate Jimmy Johns for supper.
Day One was great. Here we are at the GATEWAY TO THE WEST! YEee haw. Today we drove. Tonight we will rest and tomorrow....well....tomorrow is another whole adventure
The life I love is making music with my friends and I can't wait to get on the road again...
All my love,
Cason
